, washington, you achieved nothing this week. this is "your $$$$$." last week, president obama's offer to avoid the fiscal cliff was laughed at by republicans. this week, the gop countererred. extend the bush tax cuts to everyone, including the rich. revenue, cost savings, cutting, whatever you want to call it from vague areas such as closing, special interest loopholes and deductions, savings from health care and cuts in discretionary spending. other than that, no specifics. president obama wasn't feeling it. he said the gop must agree to one thing to get anywhere close do a deal. >>. >> wee going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. >> speaker boehner fired back. >> this week, we made a good faith offer to avert the fiscal crisis. now, we need a response from the white house. we can't sit here and negotiate with ourselves. >> so, here we are, just over three weeks from going over the fiscal cliff. you're probably getting a lot of stuff around the house this weekend wondering what the heck is going on in these houses in washingto

-on-one and no one is objecting. paul steinhauser is live from washington. paul, you got some new polling for us. what do americans want to see in a deal? >> it's interesting what they want to see and what they don't want to see. one of the biggest sticking points between democrats and republicans over averting the fiscal cliff is raising taxes on those making over $250,000 a year. look at this from quinnipiac university, the question was asked are you okay with that? 65% say they support such a move to avert the fiscal cliff. this is the third poll over the last two weeks to show the same thing, that most americans are okay with raising those taxes on incomes over $250,000 a year. go to the next screen, there's a partisan divide here. this explains why most republicans are dead set against this. democrats are fine with that move. independents as well. but only a minority of republicans are okay with raising taxes on those making over $250,000 a year. what don't republicans like? they are fine with cutting spending, but they don't want entitlements touched. are you okay with raising the eligibil

progress in washington, the possibility of plunging off that cliff is become iing more of a reality and we're just tu 22 days and counting, but for the first time in ore three weeks, president obama and house speaker john boehner actually stood in the same room. they breathed the same air, folks, and they talked and that's a big deal. especially since there's been so little of that going on lately. after the meeting, spokesman for both boehner and the president issued identical statements. that's nice. simply saying the line of communication remain open. that is promising according to former white house chief of staff erskine bowles. >> they've started to tango now and anytime you've got two guys tangoing. you've got a chance to get it done. >> how are the warnings affecting you? the american consumer. in the last few weeks, we have seen record shopping and black friday sales. we've also seen jobs numbers that are up. and today, fedex is expecting its busiest day ever. shipping about 19 million pa packages. that is about 20 packages per second. and loads of jet fuel. christine romans joini

as we go throughout connecticut, georgia, california, washington state. i mean, it is really a powerful, powerful thing to process. >> and we know that even, obviously, people who are most directly involved are going to having the highest impact and greatest impact on them. but, yeah, you are right. the people more remote that have been watching it, learning about it, talking about it, there have been studies on this and find that there is a component of post-traumatic stress even in those populations. we are talking about children here. we typically think about post-traumatic stress in adults. but even after virginia tech, for example, after a few months later, 15% of people who were involved -- went to colleges, who -- watched this very closely, still had some component of it. 77% of students at virginia tech had it. obviously much higher in the people most -- >> 77%? >> three to four months later. it is significant. there's a couple of things to keep in mind. one is that the quicker some of those symptoms and signs are recognized and dealt with, the much better prognosis people have.

for households making $1 million. so movement from both sides. cnn's dan lothian in washington with the latest on this. good morning, dan. >> good morning, john. the big question, can speaker boehner sell this proposal to house republicans? this is very dramatic, president obama had always dug in, saying there was no deal unless taxes went up on households making more than $250,000. now the president raising that to $400,000. this new proposal or counterproposal coming during a meeting at the white house between the president and speaker boehner yesterday. it lasted 45 minutes. in addition, the president proposing $1.2 trillion in new revenue. down from 1$1.4 trillion and 1$2 trillion in spending cuts. this meets the demand that speaker boehner had for an equal amount of spending cuts to revenue. but house republican aides say while this is a step in the right direction, they don't believe the president's math really adds up. brendan buck says a proposal that includes $1.3 trillion in revenue for only $930 billion in spending cuts cannot be considered balanced. so still some distance here betw
